Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Ron and Shelly:

I am in Saudi Arabia on a work assignment. I heard of your son's death only three days ago and it has hit me hard. But nowhere near as hard as it has impacted you.

Yes, we do not mourn as those who have no hope, certainly. But we do mourn. My deepest condolences and sympathy. I know your faith in the Lord sustains you and I have prayed you will continue to experience His wonderful grace. Yes, you will see him again, and I will be privileged to meet him One Great Day.

God's grace to you and yours,

Richard M. Barnes

Dear Hamilton Family,
We only just just heard today about your loss. Our deepest condolences.

Dear Mr and Mrs Hamilton and family: We attend New Testament Bapt in Kinston, NC. Patch the Pirate has been a wonderful program for our children in the early years of our church. We sing your song "Rejoice in the Lord" on a regular basis... but at this time we have no words .... only that God will hold you close-when you feel you can't hold on - Please know that depression can cause such pain even Christians- I lost my dad in 1965, a Christian, Bapt Pastor on his 43rd birthday. After all these years I still grieve from time to time or when someone walks by with a Rolaid, a song on the radio... May God hold in the palm of His Hand as you make your way the days ahead.

So, so sad to hear this. no one is immune to heartache. our prayers are with you during this awful time.

No greater loss than that of child can create such an emptiness, but be of good courage! For GOD can and will do great and mighty things from this loss! I say this because I too have lost a child in death, but death has no victory! Bless you all and be joyous in the miracles to come!

Our prayers have been with your family since learning of Jonathan's homegoing. We have been ministered to by your music, and the Patch the Pirate series, since my sister, Gertrude Morse, shared them with us. Patch...Jungle has been very special. Eagle Wings recording has had to be replaced. Thank you for sharing the special memorial service with us!

Ron and Shelly,
You have been such a testimony through the years as you have "come forth as gold" through your good times as well as your hard times. Praying for God's continual grace to comfort and surround you in the coming days.

I grew up on Patch the Pirate, all the way from the first tapes when the kids were really small. I was saved as a result of little PeeWee deciding he wanted to be a Christian on "Goes to Space". I know his death was tragic, but I wanted to share a brief instance of the ministry impact he had, even so young.
Love and prayers always.

My continued prayers for your family. Our family is so incrediably blessed by your ministry of Godly music. Our burdens for our children are so great and it grieves us so when we see them suffer. I was able to hear some of Shelly's eulogy in our church service this morning. What a testimony of God's grace and encouragement to others who grieve for their children.

God's continued blessing.

Dear Hamilton Family,
Our little girls, all grown up now, grew up listening to Patch the Pirate from the beginning so our whole family hurts for you, too. In fact, our oldest daughter after listening to Marvin the Martian head back to space, said "Mommy, I want to go to Heaven, too" and was saved directly as a result of your ministry. May God give you the amazing grace that only He can give during this time.

We are just so saddened to hear of Jonathan's passing, but know he is in a better place. When our family was on deputation 1989-1991, we would listen to the Patch the Pirate tapes over and over during our trips to churches raising support to go to Japan. We memorized the songs and stories which became part of our family's vernacular. One of our favorites is Going to Space where PeeWee becomes a Christian. Our children were influenced by your family's godly example. Thank you for sharing and being such a blessing these many years. We pray the God of all comfort will be ever closer to you now. O Rejoice in the Lord!

Mike, Drew, and I have all benefitted so much from the ministry of the entire Hamilton family--via tapes, CDs, and live. We're so thankful for the talent God has given to you all and that you have been so willing to use it for Him!

The last time I got to speak with Jonathan was some time within the past several months when he was visiting our church. I told him that, while I knew he was talented, I had no idea just HOW talented. I told him that I had enjoyed seeing his name on the PowerPoint slides Pastor Jeff puts up during our congregational and other musical numbers--sometimes as writer, other times as arranger. A look of both astonishment and delight came over his face as he said, "I had no idea that he does that!"

I believe that the look of astonishment and delight that I saw that day is but a pale shadow of the astonishment and delight he now wears for eternity. While we all miss him, and his dear family most of all, I know that no one wishes him back from the glory he is enjoying--whole of body, mind, soul, and spirit.

Praying this for the family:
"The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace." Psalm 64: 11

We were heartbroken to hear of Jonathan's passing. We knew the family in passing through Awana clubs when we were children. We also grew up listening to Patch the Pirate, along with PeeWee and Princess the Pirate. I spent many hours playing and singing music written by Mr. Hamilton and Garlock. "How Will I Fear" and "Rejoice in The Lord" are favorites of mine.

I know only too well what you are going through at this time. We lost our 19 year old son under similar circumstances just 7 months ago on 10/11/12. I have walked in your shoes very recently and understand the overwhelming shock and pain that you are feeling now. I know you might not feel like it now, but please contact me at 813-356-9888 if you ever need anything. I live in Tampa, FL but I would be happy to speak on the phone. Ron and Shelly, I wanted to express my condolences to you and the rest of the family at this difficult time. Ron I remember clear back when you lost your eye and how you took that experience to praise God and use your experience along side Shelly to reach so many homes with "Patch the Pirate" and listening to Pee Wee Pirate join you in song. Those songs were used in our home as we raised 5 kids and now our granddaughter listens to them. Jonathan had a part in that and I only know from experience that losing a child is a difficult experience to go through. May God grant all of you His all amazing grace through this time. We will continue to pray for you and know that your families testimony has reached many even when we didn't get to meet your children. We met them through music! He's your angel now and in he is in the arms of God. What a wonderful place to be. God bless and give you peace.

We love you and have had you constantly on our hearts, bringing you to the Father. Human words offer small comfort, but true hope and comfort is in God. Matthew 11:25-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Growing up his age with the CD's, I learned to love sacred music, my character was shaped, and now I serve in music with children because you shared your son and brother. I grieve with you. May the God of all comfort be your song in the night and give you His joy and peace in believing.

I first "met" Jonathan in the 1980s when he visited our home many afternoons as Pee Wee Pirate--we loved listening to his adventures over and over! I met him in person when we worked together at the Wilds the summer of 1998 (go Union Gang!) and then saw him around the BJ campus after that.

I'll always remember his trademark smile, his quick laugh, and that slightly mischievous glint in his eyes.

Grieving with you in your loss--our loss--and praying God's kind hand will guide and carry you through these difficult days.

As I was thinking about Jonathan and your family yesterday morning, I penned these lines, which I thought I'd share in the hope that they might offer some small light during this dark time:

I'm sailing westward toward the dawn
To rising day that never dies
Where shadows flee and sorrow's gone
Beyond the sunset, to the skies.

While pain may surge both dark and deep
And leave no rest where sleep should lie,
My Captain steers toward golden ports
Eternal rest, eternal light.

For sailors watching from behind
The western colors signal night,
But seamen safe on eastern shores
Rejoice instead in morning light.

For some still sailing slowly west
The night of mourning swells with storms,
And night may last for many days,
But joy is promised in the morn.

I so much enjoyed getting to know Jonathan when he was in high school and I was teaching at the Academy. He was a joy to be around, and I'll always have those good memories of him. I grew up on Patch the Pirate songs and stories, and they gave--and still give--me strength and hope in difficult times. My children now love the songs and stories, and we're thankful for Jonathan's part in that ministry. May the Lord give you peace and comfort as only He can give. Sometimes there are no words that can take away the pain, but God's presence is sufficient.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our daughters were raised with Patch the Pirate and friends. One of the favorites was O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E. As my nieces and nephews grew, they to enjoyed Patch and friends. Thank you for your love and concern for the little ones in our lives.
We are praying for a very special peace for your family during this time.

Ron and Shelly, Our prayers are with you during this difficult time, especially difficult because, in our minds, children shouldn't precede their parents in death. As you reflect on Jonothan's life and the joys he brought you, rejoice now that he is with the Lord and at rest from the struggles of this life. We are praying that you are experiencing His peace and comfort as you lean on HIM. We love you!

As all this messages testify, many people across the world are praying for your family as you deal with the tragic loss of your son. I understand having a loved one suddenly gone to heaven. These three things helped me and I pray they help you all:

1 B-R-E-A-T-H-E I found that it hurt to breathe at times or that I would almost forget to breathe deeply at times. For the children's sake, and to honor my beloved husband and my LORD I knew I had to keep breathing.
2. Run and cling to JESUS. This wasn't always easy, the pain was so great. But just like a parent responds to a newborn's cry, our loving Lord responds to our deep groanings. Many times I cried out for the LORD to just hold me up. He has been faithful.
3. People told me to take it one day at a time. Are you kidding me? A day is full of minutes and each minute can be agonizing. So I made my own saying, "One moment at a time, one breath at a time, one prayer at a time."

Praying with understanding and weeping with you, yet rejoicing in the promise of heaven.

God be with your family in this time of loss. Know he did so much for The Lord in his time here on earth. Your Family helped bring me up right in a single parent household. And contributed to me becoming the song leader for our church. Thank you so much, so sorry for this awful time of stress and grief that you have been forced to go through. I pray that even though this is an awful situation, God will use it somehow for his glory.

God be with and bless you all!

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
